Referrals: the denial you can see coming
How many charges are on hold right now waiting for a referral, and which referrals run out before the patient's next visit?
Referral denials are the most predictable ones you'll get. The visit, the dates and the visit count are all known ahead of time.
Charges held for a referral are money already earned that can't go out until the referral shows up. If nobody watches that pile, it ages quietly.
Referrals run out, too. One near its end date, or with only a few visits left, catches you on the next visit unless someone renews it first.
Warning signs
- Charges sit on hold for a referral and nobody can say how many or how old.
- A referral expires or runs out of visits before anyone asks for a new one.
- Nobody tracks whether a request was sent, how long ago, or how many times, so the same request goes out over and over, or never.
- Some referring offices rarely answer, and staff keep sending the same request instead of escalating.
What fixing it gets you
Held charges released sooner, renewals requested before they lapse, and follow-up aimed at the offices that need it.
